Trekking In Nepal

The trek begins with a flight from Kathmandu to Lukla.  The Lukla airport is a dirt strip surrounded by mountains.

Lukla is at an altitude of 9300 feet.  Flying from the Kathmandu valley, the altitude is noticeable.

My hiking group included 3 pretty ladies from Portugal, our guide Joao, and our Sherpa cook Lakpa.

Several waterfalls are near the trail.

We make several crossings of the river.

The old bridges had wood planks and are not in the best shape.

The new bridges are made of metal and are put in higher across the river so floods will not carry them away.

You can hire yaks to carry your supplies, or you can hire a porter.

When the yaks become too old or weak to carry any more, they make great steaks.

The Everest Massif from the village of Chhukhung.

Lhotse is the high peak on the right and is the fourth highest mountain in the world.

Mt. Everest is on the other side of, and is connected to, this massif but is not visible because we are so close.

Ama Dablam is one of the most prominent mountains in the region at 22,500 feet

Namche Bazaar is the largest village in the everest region.

A Stupa is at the center of Namche Bazaar.

Springs provide water for Namche, retrieved the old fashioned way.
